Welcome to my portfolio!

My name is Josh Flink (third from the right). First, a little bit about me:

I’m from Deerfield, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago. In my free time, I’m either playing or watching basketball. I’m the person I am today because of my loving parents, three older sisters, and cousin. I grew up in a small, tightknit community. My high school graduating class had 36 students. I’m a dog person and will only marry a fellow dog person.

For my entire life, I have been undecided. I prefer to call it ‘living in the moment’. You could say this indecisiveness has formed a kind of identity. Among my family and friends, the phrase, “I’m keeping my options open” has comically become my motto in life.

“Josh, are you taking a gap year?”

“Where are you going to college?”

“What’s your major?”

“Do you have plans after college?”

"What are you going to do with a Psychology major?”

I’m keeping my options open (wouldn’t you love to know. I’ll figure it out!)

Most of these questions found an answer and some are still in the works. After high school, I took a gap year in Israel. There, I studied, volunteered, took a step back, and got to know myself a little better. I’m a junior at the University of Michigan (decided on April 30th) studying Psychology and Judaic Studies, with a minor in Writing.

Unfortunately for my mother, I still don’t know what I want to do after I graduate, let alone for the rest of my life. The one thing that I am sure of is that I love to write, which led me to the Sweetland Minor in Writing.

The Minor in Writing gateway course is responsible for everything in this portfolio. The program has given me the freedom and guidance to craft natural pieces that cater to my individual, personal experience. While “writer” is still a relatively new identity for me, I loved all three of my gateway pieces and hope you enjoy!
